My film in Gottland
The Biggest Monument of Stalin :
In 1952 Czech communists decided to build the biggest Stalin statue in the world to prove the eternal alliance between the USSR and Czechoslovakia. The statue was planned to stand on Letna hill as an opposition to middle ages Prague cathedral. The iron- concrete base was embed into a heart of the hill.
When the critics of stalinism came after 1956 from the USSR, Czech communists didn’t know how to handle these new soviet tendencies. To joint the critics would mean they them self executed their comrades for no reason. There was no hero as big as Stalin to blame.
The biggest monument of Stalin was blown up in 1962 silently at night, with a strict ban on filming and photographing. Just after eight years after it had been finished.
